Genetically Modified Organisms
GMO’s have been a very hot topic for many over the past several years. The debate over if GMO’s are good or bad for us is one that can become very confusing for many. GMOs are “genetically modified organisms—such as plants or animals. They have been genetically altered with DNA from Bacteria, viruses or other plants and animals. It is thought by the biotech companies that produce GMO’s that the genetically modified organism is stronger, more resistant to herbicides and pesticides, they produce a higher yield crop, are drought tolerant, and have enhanced nutrition. Many of these characteristics have not yet been achieved as promised. Unfortunately what has been achieved is a link to many health problems, environmental damage, and violation of farmers and consumers rights (GMO Facts, 2013). GMO’s make up much of America’s food supply, and most consumers are unaware that the foods they are eating have been genetically altered and may be detrimental to their health.
